Adequate Lighting

Potential crime victims spend millions of dollars a year on security guards, surveillance cameras, elaborate locking mechanisms, and defense classes. But many people neglect one super critical aspect of safety: Adequate Lighting.

Whether you are shopping late for groceries, leaving your apartment for an extended trip to Aruba, or simply walking down the street in the evening, it's important to pay attention to how your lighting environment impacts your risk of being a victim of crime.

Dimly lit, shadowy lighting conditions allow would-be criminals to surprise victims, move stealthily, and avoid detection from cameras or witnesses. Moreover, dim lighting creates a kind of atmosphere of fear and potential aggression--and when danger sensors are primed, accidents can happen. For instance, let's say that you are walking around at night and you hear a noise that spooks you. Even if it's nothing--say an animal running through the woods--your fight-or-flight responses can be triggered to bad effect. For instance, you could run and end up tripping and spraining your ankle.

To ensure that you have an adequate safe lighting environment, here are some tips:

  • Carry a flashlight with you on your keychain
  • Automate the lighting on your home or apartment, so that when individuals come to your front door, the lights automatically go on.
  • When you park at an empty lot, park under street lamp if possible.
  • Immediately replace burned out bulbs on the exterior of your home.
  • Environmentally friendly fluorescent bulbs (the ones that are shaped like corkscrews) can provide much longer and brighter lighting than standard incandescent bulbs.
